Industry Standards and Cognitive Technologies

2
Standards play a key role in mainstream technology
  • Internet protocols
  • WWW (HTML, Web services,…)
  • Programming languages
  • ….
3
Standards implement coopetition
  • Companies that are fierce competitors recognize that they benefit from cooperating to establish common interfaces
  • Web services from IBM and from Microsoft are both more useful if they are compatible, building the market for both companies
  • Consumers benefit as well
4
Assistive Technology can benefit from participation in mainstream standards activities
5
Support for single system signon is under development by two industry consortia

  • Single system signon allows Web users to share user profile information with websites without having to sign in at each site
6
"With single system signon,"
  • With single system signon, people with disabilities could specify accommodation preferences in their user profiles
    • For example, “I want simplified text if it’s available,” or “I want multimodal presentation if it’s available.”
7
To get this benefit we have to agree on how accommodation preferences will be specified…
8
…and we have to shape the mainstream user profile standard.
9
“Occasionally connected devices”
  • Many assistive technology applications use devices that are sometimes, but only sometimes, online.
  • Such devices are increasingly important in mainstream technology, as well
  • Efforts are beginning to define standard ways of supporting these devices, reducing software complexity and cost
  • Assistive technologists should seek ways to participate in these developments
10
Standards will become important within the Assistive Technology community

Offer!
  • If any organization is interested in participating in AIMS, but needs technical assistance in exploring it (for example, doing a trial conversion of existing materials) please let me know… we’ll look at your needs and help if we can.

  • The Coleman Institute wants to support this development!

13
Other standards opportunities
  • User interface
    • TRACE Center’s EZ Access®  design offers direction on some basic controls
    • Paramount need for flexibility and customizability in interfaces for people with cognitive disabilities presents a challenge for standardization

14
"But we can do a..."
  • But we can do a better job of sharing design choices, so that things that don’t have to be different won’t be different
  • Community support for design sharing will reduce cost and increase value

No-one would have to use the common icons
  • But those who could use them would benefit

Your ideas needed!
  • We’re establishing the Coleman Technology Forum to promote action on standards and technology trends
    • Helping Assistive Technology shape mainstream standards
    • Helping Assistive Technology profit from mainstream technology developments
    • Promoting coopetition within the Assistive Technology world

Please give me your card or contact me if you are interested in participating!
